Terceiro dia em Nova York - New York day hree

Hoje arrumamos mais um amigo pra rodar Nova York com a gente, o Jonny. Ele é da Irlanda do Norte, muito gente boa, e louco por futebol! Começamos o dia indo ao Museu de História Natural. Ele é bem legal, com emfoque na diversidades de culturas ao longo da história pelo mundo todo. Tem várias coisas muito interessantes explicando costumes e tradições de diversas civilizações, e também coisas sobre o espaço e a origem do universo. Mas o que mais chama a atenção mesmo são os fósseis de dinossauros. A quantidade é enorme, e a diversidade também! Tem um monte de espécies de dinossauros diferentes, e várias coisas relacionadas à evolução do planeta.

Depois do Museu de História Natural, fomos para a Columbus Circle, que é tipo uma pracinha com um monumento em homenagem a Cristóvão Colombo, por ter descoberto a America. Na verdade, não é lá grande coisa, mas vale pra algumas fotos. Almoçamos por lá mesmo, numa espécie de supermercado que é restaurante (ou será que é um restaurante que é supermecado?), dentro de um centro comercial. Depois disso, fomos dar uma relaxada básica no Central Park. Aproveitei pra deitar na grama e tirar aquela sonequinha show!

Saindo do Central Park, fomos em direção ao Rockafeller Center, um centro comercial gigante (pega um quadrado de uns três quarteirões de lado). O legal dele é que ele é praticamente um Shopping Center subterrâneo, bem legal! E quando a gente sobe pra superfície, dá pra ver a parte central, com bandeiras de diversos países do mundo em volta. E logo à frente fica o local onde é colocada a famosa arvore de natal do Rockafeller Center, que é considerada a maior do mundo.

Continuando o passeio, demos uma passadinha rápida na Macy's, a que dizem que é a maior loja de departamentos do mundo. Realmente, essa loja é grande pra caramba, devia ter uns nove andares, e o prédio tomava o quarteirão todo!!! Mas não tem nada de mais além de uma loja normal de departamentos.

Depois da Macy's, subimos até o topo do Empire State, o prédio mais alto de Nova York (isso porque não existe mais o World Trade Center). O dia estava um pouco nublado, mas ainda assim conseguimos ver bastante coisa. A vista lá em cima é maravilhosa! Dá pra ver a Ilha de Manhattam inteirinha, e ainda mais um pouco do resto de Nova York e Nova Jersey. E dá pra identificar vários pontos famosos também, como alguns prédios e a Estátua da Liberdade.

Pra terminar o dia, descemos do Empire State e fomos tomar um sorvetinho Häagen-Dazs ali por perto (que por sinal é muito bom!). Depois, fomos direto pro hostel e ficamos curtindo as fotos que tiramos hoje.

Today we got one more friend to walk around New York with us, Jonny. He is from North Ireland, very funny guy, crazy for soccer. We started the day going to the Natural History Museum. It's pretty cool, with focus on different cultures through the history all over the world. It has lots of interesting things explaining habits and traditions of several civilizations, and also about space and the origin of the universe. But what really calls people's attention are the dinosaurs fossils. It's quite large on quantity and diversity! There are lots of different dinosaur species, and lots of things related to the planet's evolution.

After the Natural History Museum, we went to the Columbus Center, it's like a small square with a monument in honor of Christopher Colombus for having discovered America. Actually, it's not that good, but worths some pictures. We had lunch around there, in a kind of grocery store that is a restaurant (or would it be a restaurant that is a grocery store?), inside of a commercial center. After that, we went to the Central Park to relax a little bit. I used this free time to get that power nap!

Leaving the Central Park, we went to the Rockafeller Center, a huge commercial complex (it is a square of 3 blocks of side size). A cool thing is that it's like an underground shopping mall, and when we go up to the surface, we can see its central part, with flags of lots of different countries all around it. And right in front of it is the place where that famous Rockafeller's huge Christmas tree stays, it's considered the tallest in the world.

We kept walking, and dropped real quick by the Macy's, it's said to be the biggest department store in the world. In fact, it's really huge, it has about nine floors, and the building was all around the block!!! But it's not a big deal, just a normal department store.

After Macy's, we went up to the top of the Empire State building, the tallest building in New York (that's because there is no more World Trade Center). The day was a little cloudy, but we could still have a good view from the city. Actually, it's a wonderful view from up there! We can see the entire Manhattan island, and a little bit of the rest of New York, and New Jersey. And we can identify lots of famous spots around the city, like a few buildings and the Statue of Liberty.


To finish the day, we left the Empire State building and had a little Häagen-Dazs ice-cream (it's very good, by the way!). After that, we went back to the hostel and stayed at the louge, checking the pictures we had taken today.

Segundo dia em Nova York - New York day two

Eu já tava ficando chateado de não ter encontrado ninguém pra rodar a cidade comigo, quando durnte o café da manhã eu conheci a Nina, uma menina muito legal da Alemanha, e que se juntou a mim nessa aventura por Nova York. Então começamos o dia indo para o Battery Park, ao sul da ilha de Manhattan, pra pegar o barco e ir para Liberty Island, a ilha onde fica a Estátua da Liberdade. O passeio de barco é legalzinho, dá pra ter uma boa vista da parte sul de Manhattan, e também da Ellis Island, onde fica um museu (não deu tempo de ir até lá...). E é claro, dá pra ter uma excelente vista da Estátua da Liberdade. Chegando na ilha, não pudemos subir até o topo da estátua, porque tava lotado de gente, e teríamos que ter agendado via internet com dois dias de antecedência. Então a gente apenas passeou pela ilha e tiramos fotos.

Na volta da ilha, demos uma voltinha no Battery Park, onde achamos alguns monumentos em memória aos soldados que morreram na 2ª guerra. Depois disso, seguimos em direção norte para o Finantial District, onde está o Federal Reserve Bank (uma espécie de caixa-forte, onde fica a reserva monetária em ouro do país. Também não deu tempo de entrar...), a famosa Wall Street e a Bolsa de Valores de Nova York. O bairro é basicamente comercial, cheio de prédios chiques e executivos pra todo lado.

Depois disso, passamos pelo Ground Zero, o local onde ficava o World Trade Center. Agora eles estão construindo um novo conjunto de prédios, então agora estava tudo como um grande canteiro de obras. Ao lado do terreno havia uma espécie de museu em tributo ao atentado, com relíquias, notícias e histórias sobre ele. outro dia passamos pelo centro financeiro em volta do Ground Zero, e pudemos ver uma maquetezinha de como vai ficar depois de contruído.

Então fomos para o City Hall (prefeitura), que não tinha nada de mais. O interessante foi que, durante a nossa caminhada, perto do City Hall, tava rolando uma filmagem para algum filme, então tinha um monte de gente em volta querendo saber o que estava acontecendo... Quem sabe eu não apareço em algum filme de Hollywood no fundo de alguma cena... ehehhe....

Depois do City Hall, fomos almoçar, e daí nos dirigimos para a Times Square. Ela consistem basicamente de uma rua cheia de letreiros luminosos, vários anúncios audiovisuais por toda parte e uma série de lojas famosas. É muito legal, realmente deixa a gente impressionado... Daí aproveitamos que estávamos por lá e passamos pela Broadway. Na verdade os teatros não ficam todos na Broadway, mas nas travessas dela, e perto da Times Square. De qualquer forma, havia muitos teatros por toda a parte, passando várias peças e musicais interessantes. Então nós compramos nossos ingressos e voltamos para o albergue, pra tomar um banhozinho antes da peça. Mas no caminho, outra coisa engraçada... Vi um estacionamento muito louco, em que há vagas suspensas para os carros, dêem uma olhada na foto!

Pra terminar o passeio do dia, fomos assistir "The Phantom of the Opera" (O Fantasma da Opéra) na Broadway. O negócio é praticamente inimaginável, uma superprodução incrível!!! A orquestra, o número de atores, o figurino e principalmente o cenário, é tudo muito impressionante! Foi uma pena eu não ter podido tirar fotos de dentro do teatro, mas o ingresso caro valeu muito a pena, foi uma experiência única!!!

Depois da peça, fomos jantar na Times Square, e voltamos para o albergue, para descansar um pouco os pés pro dia seguinte... =)

I was a little bit sad because I hadn't found anyone to walk around the city with me, but I met Nina during breakfast. She is a very nice girl from Germany, and joined me on this little adventure around New York. So we started our day by going to the Battery Park, on the south part of the Manhattan, to get the ferry boat to the Liberty Island, where the Statue of Liberty is. The ferry ride is kinda cool, we can get a good view from the south part of Manhattan, and also from the Ellis Island, where there is a museum (we didn't have enough time to go there...). And we can have a pretty good view of the Statue of Liberty, of course. Once in the Island, we couldn't go to the top, because it was completely packed, and we should have scheduled it within two days in advance. so we just walked around the island and took some pictures.

After coming back from the island, we walked around the Battery Park, and we could see some monuments in the memory of soldiers who had died on the Second World War. After that, we went north, to the Finantial District, where is the Federal Reserve Bank (lots of gold inside... But we also didn't have enough time to go inside...), the famous Wall Street and the New york Stock Market. That district is essencially composed by fancy commercial buildings, and business men everywhere.

After this, we went to the Ground Zero, the place where the World Trade Center used to be. Now it's being built a new complex of buildings, so it was just like a huge job site. Right by its side there was a kind of museum, in tribute to the attack, with remains, newspapers and other stories about it. A few days after, we passed by the finantial center around the Ground Zero, and we could see a little model of how it's gonna be when it's finished.

Then we went to the City Hall, what was no big deal. But the interesting thing was that we saw some people making movie shots on our way to the City Hall, so there were lots of people around wondering what was happening... Maybe I will be in some Hollywood movie on the background... eheheh...

After the City Hall, we had lunch, and then we went to the Times Square. It's basically a street full of light placards, lots of multimedia ads all around it, and lots of famous stores. It's very cool, really makes us very impressed... Then we took a walk around Broadway. If fact, the theaters are not only at the Broadway street, but on streets crossing it, and close to the Times Square. Anyway, there were lots of theathers all over the place, with lots of interesting plays and musicals. Then we bought our tickets and came back to the hostel, to get a little shower before the play. But on our way back, another funny thing... I saw a very crazy parking lot, with cars parked right over others, just take a look at the picture!

To finish our day, we went to watch "The Phantom of the Opera" on the Broadway. That thing is just unimaginable, an incredible super production!!! The orchestra, the number of actors, the customs and specially the scenery, everything is just amazing! It's a petty that I couldn't take pictures from inside of the theather, but the expensive ticket was really worthed, it was an unique experience!!!

After the play, we had dinner at the Times Square, and came back to the hostel to give some rest to our feet, to be able to to walk on the next day... =)

Primeiro dia em Nova York - New york day one

Galera, vou contar aqui as minhas aventuras desbravando Nova York! Para aqueles que por ventura venham a se basear nisto para viajar para conhecer essas cidade, saibam que este não é um roteiro otimizado, pois não tive tempo de me planejar. Mas pelo menos dá pra saber um pouco das atrações...

Bom, comecei o dia aterrisando em Washington, e quase perdi o meu vôo pra Nova York por causa da fila gigante do registro de estrangeiros... Nesse ponto a "honestidade" dos americanos mostrou uma total falta de bom senso. Pedi pra uma das oficiais para que me deixasse passar na frente, mas ela simplesmente me disse que isso "não era o procedimento" (algo como um "foda-se" mais educado...). No fim das contas, saí de lá faltando 15 minutos pro meu vôo. E como eu sempre tenho muita sorte, o meu portão de embarque era lá na casa do caralho. Fui correndo e cheguei lá suando em bicas, e a comissária já estava fechando a porta, minha sorte podia mudar em questão de segundos...

Ok, depois desse susto, cheguei a Nova York. Saindo do aeroporto, tomei um daqueles táxis amarelinhos e fui pra Manhattam. Aliás, quem disse que táxi em Nova York é barato??? A corrida foi 30 dólares, e não durou mais do que 10 minutinhos... Enfim, achei o albergue (demorou um pouco, porque a fachada tava em reforma, então não dava pra ver que aquele prédio era o albergue), só que o quarto ainda não estava liberado. Como só iam liberar à tarde, tranquei minhas malas por lá e saí passear.

O albergue em que estou hospedado fica a 2 quadras do Central Park, então não tive dúvidas e fui direto para lá. Entrei pelo canto noroeste na Central Park West e fui descendo em direção sudeste, saindo do outro lado na 5th Avenue. Continuei descendo pela 5th Avenue, e vi que lá se localizam vários museus em sequência. Passei por vários e fui direto pro Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met), que tava bombando!

O Met é gigantesco, e tem umas 20 exposições, entre fixas e temporárias. E o engraçado é que existe um preço sugerido de entrada, mas você paga quanto quiser, desde que page alguma coisa... ehehhe... Ok, deixei 20 verdinhas lá e comecei o passeio (detalhe, rodei pelo museu durante 5 horas, sem parar muito, e consegui ver só metade das coisas).

A primeira galeria que visitei foi a de arte egípcia. Tem muita coisa, e é interessante pra caramba. Na verdade, essa é a maior exposição de arte egípcia fora do Egito (é bizarramente grande). Tem múmias, sarcófagos, pergaminhos, muitos achados arqueológicos e até mesmo reconstrução de partes de tumbas. Incrível! Depois desta, passei pela galeria de História Americana, que mostrava muitos cenários de locais da época, quadros e bustos. Então fui visitar a ala de cultura asiática, incluindo vários países como Japão, China, Índia, Coréia, Sri-Lanka, Taiwan e outros. Muito legal, mostravam várias coisas como roupas, arte em geral e objetos da época. Continuando a caminhada, passei pela ala de instrumentos musicais, com coisas incríveis, vários instrumentos inimagináveis!!! Depois passei pela cultura européia (outra ala gigantesca!), com vários quadros, esculturas e cenários de época também. Então fui para a ala de armas e armamentos, cada coisa mais bizarra que a outra! Tinha armaduras e armas de várias culturas do mundo todo, bem interessante. Por fim, visitei a ala de cultura grega e romana. Como podem imaginar, várias escuturas e estátuas, bem naquele estilo que conhecemos do greco-romano.

Depois disso, o museu estava fechando, então tive que voltar para o albergue, para finalmente conseguir um quarto. Vim andando para apreciar mais um pouco das ruas de Nova York, e reparei que há muitas igrejas por aqui. Mas muitas mesmo, tirei fotos de várias! E uma foto bem engraçada também! Não são só os engenheiros que usam silver-tape pra qualquer coisa... eheheheh...

No albergue, consegui meu quarto, com 6 beliches. Até que era bem limpo e ajeitado (pra quem está acostumado com plataformas de petróleo, tava excelente!). Mas não encontrei nenhum pessoal pra me enturmar ainda, quem sabe amanhã...

Pra completar o dia, resolvi passear à noite pela Broadway, no sentido Uptown (norte), que é onde os teatros não estão... eeheh... Mas foi bem legal também, eu visitei a Universidade de Columbia (o campus é muito bonito, bem no meio da cidade), vi mais igrejas, e terminei na Grant's Tomb, um monumento em memória ao General Grant. Então voltei pro albergue pela Riverside (avenida beirando o rio Hudson), e então fui pra minha cama pra um merecido descanso! Mas antes eu dei uma passadinha no Lounge do albergue, e tava rolando um showzinho de humor, típico daqui dos EUA. O cara não gostou muito, mas eu gravei um pouquinho pra vocês verem.

Guys, I will write here about my adventures walking around New York! For the ones who may plan any trips to New York on this, I have to let you know that this is not a optimized itinerary, because I didn't have enough time to plan the trip. But at least you can get to know a little about the touristic places...

Well, I started the day landing in Washington, and almost lost my flight to New York because of the huge queue in the passaport registration... At this point, the "honesty" of american people showed a total lack of good sense. I asked to one of the officers to let me skif the queue, but she just told me that "it wasn't the procedure" (something like a polite "fuck you"...). In the end I finished my registration 15 minutes before my flight should depart. And as I aways have a good luck, the gateway was as far as possible from the entrance. I run a lot and when I got there, I was sweating a lot, and the commissary was closing the gate! My luck could have changed in just a few seconds...

Ok, after this little inconvenient, I arrived on New York. Leaving the airport, I took one of those yellow cabs, and went to Manhattam. By the way, who told me that taxis in New York are cheap??? The ride was 30 dollars, and it was no more than 10 short minutes... Anyway, I found the hostel (it took a little time, because its front was being reformed, so we couldn't see that the building was the hostel), but my room was not ready yet. AS it would be ready by the afternoon, I left my bags in the locker and went out for a walk.

The hostel I'm in is just 2 blocks away from the Central Park, so I had no doubts and went straight to there. I got in by the Northwest corner at the Central Park West street and went down to the southeast, going all the way to the other side up to the 5th Avenue. So I kept walking on the 5th Avenue, and saw that there were lots of museums in a row. I just passed by them, and went straight to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met), what was packed!

The Met is really huge, and has got about 20 exhibitions, permanent and temporary ones. A funny thing is that there is a suggested ticket price, but you can pay whatever you want, just need to pay something... eheheh... Ok, I left 20 bucks there and started my tour (a little detail, a walked around the museum for about 5 hours, without stopping too much, and I could see only half of the things there).

The first gallery I visited was the Egypcian Art. It has lots of things, and is very interesting. Actually, that's the largest Egyptian Art exhibition outside Egypt (it's really huge!). It has mummies, sarcophagi, parchments, lots of archeological findings and even some reconstructions of parts of tombs. Incredible! After this, I went to the American History gallery, that was showing lots of sceneries, from different locals from that period, paintings and busts. Then I went to visit the Asian culture, including countries like Japan, China, India, Korea, Sri-Lanka, Taiwan and some others. It was pretty cool, with lots of things like clothes, general art and objects from older times. Continuing my walk, I passed by the musical intruments gallery, with some incredible and unimaginable instruments!!! After that, I went to the European culture (another huge gallery), with lots of paitings, sculptures and also sceneries from its old periods. THen I went to the Arms and Armaments gallery, lots of bizarre things like medieval armors and weapons. There were lots from different cultures all around the world, very interesting! At last, I visited the Roman and Greek cultures gallery. AS you can imagine, lots of sculptures and statues from that greek-roman style we know well.

After this, the museum was going to close, so I had to go back to the hostel, to finally get a room. I wanted to go by walking, so I could check a little bit more of the streets from New York, and I notice that there are lots of churches aroud here. Really, a lot! I took pictures of many of them. And also a funny picture, it's not only the engineers that can solve everything with silver-tape... ehehhe...

Back to the hostel, I got a room with 6 berths (for 12 people). It was very clean and well organized (for someone who is used to oil platforms, it was excellent!). But I still haven't found any cool guys to hang out, maybe tomorrow...

To finish my first day, during the night I decided to take a walk along the Broadway street, going uptown (north), where there are no theathers... eehhe... But it was pretty cool, I visited the Columbia University (the campus is very beautiful, right in the middle of the city), saw some more churches, and ended up at the Grant's Tomb, a monument in memory of General Grant. Then I came back to the hostel through the Riverside avenue (the avenue at the margin of the Hudson River), and then I went to my bed, for a well deserved rest. But before this, I quickly dropped by the hostel lounge, where there was a guy doing a little humor show, what's typical from USA. He didn't liked that much, but I recorded a little video so you could check it out.

Novo recorde - New record

Hoje desembarquei de uma operação que seria simples, mas acabou dando muito trabalho... No final das contas, quebrei meu recorde de horas acordado. Agora estou em 68!!! Isso sem contar que eu só tinha dormido umas 3 horas antes de começar a trabalhar... Mas tudo bem, já tou me acostumando com isso...
Agora uma notícia boa: no próximo sábado vou pros EUA de novo, fazer outro curso da empresa. Mas antes, vou ficar uma semana passeando em Nova York!!! Show! Assim que puder, vou postar aqui minhas aventuras por lá.

Today I disembarked from a job that would be simple, but it ended in lot of work. Now I got a new record, 68 hours awake!!! Not to mention that I just had slept 3 hours before the job had started... Well, that's fine, I'm getting used to it...
Some good news: on the next Saturday I'm going to USA again, for another training course from my company. But before I will take a one-week tour around New York!!! That will be great! As soon as I can, I will post here some of my adventures there.

Trabalho de graça - Work for free

Fui pra plataforma pra fazer um trabalho, e atrasou muito! Esperei 4 dias fazendo absolutamente nada... No quinto dia, depois de horas montando o equipamento, adiaram o trabalho, e então passamos mais horas desmontando... Um dia todinho trabalhando de graça... =(

Bom, mas agora uma notícia boa... Vou pra os EUA de novo para outro curso da empresa, dia 15 de julho! Quero ir logo, porque dizem que a segunda vez é bem mais tranquilo, praticamente férias... eheheh...

I went to a platform for a job, but it got delayed a lot! I waited for 4 days doing absolutely nothing... On the fifth day, after hours assembling the equipment, the job was postponed, so we spent some more hours disassembling the equipment... An entire day working for free... =(

Well, now a good news... I'm going to USA again, for another training course from my company, on 15th july! I'm looking forward to it, because I was told that the second course is pretty easy, almost like vacations... eheheh...

Som 3D - 3D Sound

Sem muitas novidades, aproveitei que a atividade está um pouco baixa esses dias para estudar, principalmente num fim de semana chuvoso como este... Mas olha só que coisa legal que eu vi na internet, tecnologias para som 3D. Coloque o fone de ouvido com os fones corretos (direito na orelha direita e esquedo na orelha esquerda, é claro!), e escutem o som abaixo. É incrível! Tem que ser com o fone, senão não dá o efeito 3D!

Put your earphones correctly (right one on the right ear, left one on the left ear, of course!), and listen to the sound above. It's amazing! But you gotta use the earphones, otherwise you won't have the 3D effect!
