Hoje é feriado aqui nos EUA, e a gente teve o dia de folga. Na verdade, acho que a gente não teria o feriado... Mas como a gente trabalhou ontem que era domingo, deram um desconto pra gente.
O engraçado é que eu perguntei pros americanos o que significava esse feriado, e nenhum deles soube me explicar direito... O máximo que eu consegui foi que se trata de uma espécie de tributo aos mortos nas guerras. Incrível isso!

Today is holiday here in USA, and we had a day-off. Actually, I think we woudn't have this day-off... But as we worked yesterday, Sunday, they gave us a chance to rest.
It's funny that I asked the americans what was this holiday about, and no one could tell me... The max I could get was that it is a kinf of paying respect to the soldiers who died on the war. This is incredible!
Acabei mais um trabalho. Esse foi mais difícil, e eu tive muito mais azar do que nos outros... =( ... Espero que a maré de azar que eu tive nesse vá embora antes do próximo. I've finished one more job. This one was harder, and I had much more bad luck than the other jobs... =( ... I hope this bad luck will go away before the next job. But before this bad luck today, I was still happy, and I took a picture to post here. And other day I saw a different grig, very big, and I thought it would be cool to post its picture. I know I can seem like "nonsense", but you can't expect too much from me after spending two entire nights working... =)

I forgot to tell you my grades in the past few days... In the last practical job, they gave us 3 grades, and mine were 92%, 70% and 65%. Yesterday, I got 89% on the radiation test. And today I had two "little" tests, I got 40% and 70%... I'm starting to screw things up here... =(
Again, no news... (in Portuguese, it sounds like a joke, but doesn't work in English...) But I'm posting more pictures. They are from things we've been doing here, and were taken by Christophe. There is even a picture of me working for real! =D
Quando eu tava no primeiro ano da faculdade, um amigo meu, que já era formado, me mandou uma foto dessa, e eu fiquei imaginando se um dia eu conseguiria tirar uma assim também. Consegui...
Mas antes que alguém pense que eu tou querendo me mostrar ou esnobar, eu na verdade tou querendo mostrar como estou feliz em atingir esta condição, coisa que eu imaginava impossível há uns 5 ou 6 anos. Dormi praticamente o dia inteiro hoje, pra recuperar as energias de duas noites viradas essa semana... E só pra ter uma foto pra colocar aqui, uma da hora do almoço. Fomos a mais um dos milhares de fast-food existentes aqui, e tou mostrando pra vocês como eu não exagero quando digo que tudo aqui é gigante... O copo menor é o meu, mas é o tamanho pequeno aqui, cerca de 700ml. O maior é do meu amigo, cerca um litro e meio! (Detalhe: tentei fazer uma cara engraçada, mas saiu mais pra careta...)

Today I slept almost the all day, to recover my energies from being awake all night long twice this week... And just to post a picture here, one from lunch time. We went to one more among thousands of fast-food places that exist here, and I'm showing you that I'm not exaggerating when I say that everything here is giant... The smaller cup is mine, and it's the smaller size, about 700ml. The bigger one is my friend's, it's about one liter and a half! (Detail: I tried to make a funny face, but I got a weird one...)
Pra quem não tem idéia de como é um poço de petróleo, tou colocando duas fotos. A primeira é da sonda, que a gente usa como suporte pra colocar as nossas ferramentas no poço, e a outra é do topo do poço, o que a gente chama de cabeça.
Nesses últimos dois dias, trabalhei pra caramba... Foram em torno de 9 horas fazendo aquisição de dados e mais 6 horas gerando relatórios... E ainda tenho q ir lá trabalhar de peão pros outros engenheiros.

For who doesn't have a clue about how is a oil well, I'm posting two pictures. The first one is the rig, which we use to hook our tools on it and run them into the well, and the second one is the top of the well, what we call well head.
In these last two days, I've been working a lot... It was around 9 hours acquiring data and more 6 hours generating reports... And I still have to go back there to work as an operator for other engineers.
Hoje as regras do jogo mudaram, e eu tinha que tirar 8,0 pra passar na prova... Por sorte, tirei 9,1! Ainda bem...
Fora isso, nenhuma novidade... A aula foi tranqüila, e hoje estudei e me preparei pro próximo trabalho, que pelo jeito vai ser bem mais difícil...

Today the game rules were changed, and I would have to get 80% to pass on the test... Luckly, I got 91%! I was relieved...
Besides this, no more news... Today's class was all right, and I studied and prepared myself for the next job, because it seems to be much more difficult...

Hoje nada de muito novo... Só estudei, porque tenho uma prova difícil amanhã, e fiquei um tempo sem fazer nada, só assistindo TV... Acho que hoje tava rolando um dia inteiro de Mithbusters na Discovery, aproveitei meu tempo inútil pra ficar assistindo coisas inúteis... eehehe... Pra quem não conhece esse programa, são dois caras que tentam comprovar cientificamente se mitos populares são plausíveis ou não, como por exemplo se um celular pode causar uma explosão em um posto de gasolina, ou se a gente se molha mais ao correr na chuva... Esse tipo de besteiras...
Uma coisa interessante que eu descobri é o motivo pelo qual os alunos de colegial e faculdade dão tanta importância aos esportes, e porque as faculdades oferecem bolsas de estudos a alunos que sejam bons esportistas. Nos esportes aqui (futebol americano, beisebol, hóquei e basquete), os jogadores das ligas principais são escolhidos dos times das universidades e dos colegiais, e os escolhidos ganham muita grana! Por isso que todos querem entrar pros times... Grana fácil sem ter que estudar muito... E não é muito comum a compra e venda de jogadores, como rola no Brasil. Geralmente, se um cara entra pra um time, fica nele até o fim da carreira.
Deve ter gente achando que eu sou um amante de animais, de tantas fotos de animais que eu coloco aqui... Sim, eu gosto de animais, mas não a esse tanto. Na verdade, tou colocando fotos deles, pois são coisas que a gente não vê no Brasil, então queria poder mostrar pra todo mundo. E por falar nisso, hoje tirei mais uma foto, de um ninho que os caras aqui do alojamento montaram, e veio um passarinho. Parece ser uma rolinha, mas eu não tenho certeza... O John disse que frito fica bom! Ehehe... De qualquer forma, achei bonitinho...
E ontem eu peguei umas fotos da galera aqui, então tou postando pra vocês. São fotos mostrando coisas desde o dia que a gente chegou, de temas variados, então deixem o mouse um tempo na foto para ver a legenda. Também tou postando um vídeozinho, que mostra a gente armando os explosivos.

No news today... I just studied, because I will have a tough test tomorrow, and I also spent some time doing nothing, just watching TV... I think there was some kind of "Mithbusters day" on Discovery Channel, so I used my idle time to watch nedless things... eheheh... For who doesn't know this TV show, it's two guys trying to prove scientifically if some popular miths are plausible or not, like if a mobile phone can cause an explosion on a gas station, or if we get wetter running in the rain instead of walking... These kind of stupid things...
One interesting thing that I found out is why high-school and university students give so much value to sports, and why do universities offer scholarships to students who are good players. In sports here (football, baseball, hockey and basketball), players from major leagues are picked from high-school and university teams, and the chosen ones earn lots of money! That's why all of them wanna be part of teams... Easy money with no need to study hard... And it's not very common to buy and sell players, like in Brazil. Usually, if a guy plays for one team, will play for this team until the end of his career.
There must be some people thinking that I'm an animals' lover, because of so many animals' pictures I've been posting here... Yes, I like animals, but not that much. Actually, I'm posting these pictures because we don't have these animals in Brazil, so I wanted to show to everybody. And talking about that, today I took one mor picture, of a nest the guys from the lodging built , and there was a bird on it. It seems to be a kind of pigeon, but I'm not sure. John told me it tastes good! Ehehe... Anyway, I thought it was cute...

Hoje vi outro pato aqui. Tá, eu sei que já mostrei foto de pato, mas esse era diferente, e não é sempre que a gente vê um pato no jardim... Mas esse tava meio estranho, não fugiu quando eu cheguei perto, e ficou todo trêmulo... e depois se escondeu nos arbustos. Será que tava machucado?
Nosso intrutor mostrou esse vídeo pra gente, é de uma ferramenta usada pra filmar o interior de um poço de petróleo. O mais louco é que o filme mostra um esqueleto de cobra e (bizarro!) um ratinho vivo lá no fundo! Fico imaginando como o rato sobreviveu lá... Falando em vídeos, coloquei as legendas naquele vídeo que eu tou mostrando o meu trabalho, pra galera que não fala português poder entender também... Mas isso me tomou bem umas duas horas... =(

Today I saw another duck here. Ok, I know I've already posted a duck's picture, but this one was different, and it's rare to see a duck in the garden... But this one was kinda weird, it didn't run away when I came closer, and was shaking... after this, he hid himself among the bushes. I wonder if we was hurt...
Our instructor showed us this video (above), about a tool used to record movies from inside the well. The crazy thing is that it shows an skane skeleton and (bizarre!) a small mouse alive down there! I can't imagine how it survived there... And talking about movies, I put the subtitles in that video where I'm showing my job, so non- portuguese speakers can understand too... But it took me at least two hours! =(

Guys, the day was really tough... But I had a good idea (I think...). Aways when I try to explain my job, no one can understand... After this, when I was coming back from work, walking up the road, I saw a turtle right in the middle of the road, and one car almost ran over it! I felt pitty for this little turtle, so I took it to a lake close to the road... I think it's where it wanted to go, because it was headed towards the lake. If not, what a pity...
Lembram do trabalho que tava programado pra hoje? Pois é, atrasou... Eu vou começar provavelmente por volta de meia noite, e acabar por volta de 3 da tarde do dia seguinte... Legal, né?
Uma coisa interessante que eu notei aqui... A abundância de emprego. Se você andar pela rua aqui, vai ver placas de empregos em pelo menos metade dos estabelecimentos comerciais, como lojas, restaurantes, postos de gasolina... Por isso que um monte de gente fica tentando entrar ilegalmente aqui! E pros americanos, imigrantes ilegais são ruins, pois não pagam impostos mas usufruem dos serviços públicos. E é aí que toda a briga começa... E este é o motivo pelo qual a gente acha tantos latinos em empregos de "baixo escalão", como faxineiros, entregadores... O mundo é mesmo cruel com quem não tem grandes oportunidades...
Como tou sem mais novidades, tou colocando uma foto de um pacote gigante de Ruffles (aqui tudo é gigante!), pra ilustrar mais um pouco da cultura americana. Mas eu não comi tudo de uma vez não, só um pouquinho! Eheheh.... An interesting thing that I noticed here... Jobs abundance. If you walk around the streets here, you will be able to see jobs sign in at least half of its commercial establishments, like stores, restaurants, gas stations... That's why lots of people keep trying to come to USA illegally! And for american people, to have illegal immigrants is bad, because they don't pay taxes but use public services. And there is the beginning of all fights... And that's why we can find so many latin people working in "low-rated" jobs, like cleaners, delivery men... World is really cruel to who doesn't have good opportunities...
As I don't have any news, I'm posting here a picture of a giant Ruffles packet (everything here is giant!), to illustrate a little bit more of american culture. But I didn't eat it all at once, just a little bit! Eheheh... Another funny picture is this one, where our instructor didn't find a laser or a poiting wand to point to the screen, so he was simply using a fishing wand...

Dia de descanso, dia de farra! Hoje fomos num paintball, foi muito louco! O problema é que aqueles tiros doem pra caralho! Tou todo marcado de tiros... Mas valeu a pena, apesar de eu ser ruim pra caramba de pontaria. Sério mesmo, acho que eu não consegui acertar ninguém! Só servi mesmo foi pra um bom alvo...
Depois disso, fomos jantar no apê da Emma, pra descontrair um pouco. E enquanto estávamos jantando, vi mais um exemplar da fauna local: um pato nadando na piscina! Dá pra imaginar encontrar um pato na piscina??? Realmente muito estranho. E o mais bizarro foi ele sair voando depois que eu tirei a foto... Nem sabia que pato voava...
Outra coisa que eu tou pra comentar faz tempo, mas sempre esqueço... Descobri que a gente pega a famosa rota 66 todos os dias pra ir pra aula. Mas é bem diferente do que a gente vê nos filmes, aquela pista toda empoeirada, no meio do nada... Pelo menos aqui em Oklahoma...

Day off, day for fun! Today we went to play paintball, was so cool! The bad thing is that those shots are fucking painful! My body is full of shot marks... But it had worth, despite I being a really bad shooter. Seriously, I think I coudn't shoot anyone! I was only a good aim in the middle of the field...
After this, we had dinner at Emma's, to release our stress a little bit. And while we were having dinner, I saw one more example of the local fauna: a duck swimming at the swimming pool! Can you imagine to find a duck in your pool??? Really strange. But even more bizarre, we flew away after I took the picture... I didn't know that ducks could fly...
Another thing I was about to comment, but aways forgot... I found out that we take the famous route 66 everyday on our way to the training center. But it's very different from what we see in the movies, that straight highway full of dust, in the middle of nowhere... At least here in Oklahoma...
Voltou a chover e fazer frio... ô cidadezinha de merda essa, o clima nunca se estabiliza! E hoje a gente tinha trabalho prático no campo, ou seja, passamos o dia todo na chuva. E eu já táva quase bom do resfriado, pelo jeito vou ficar ruim de novo... =(
À noite, balada! Foi bem legal, jogamos bilhar, dançamos... E o pessoal se embebedou muito! O John veio falar pra mim dar em cima de umas minas, mas eu disse que elas estavam acompanhadas, e ele, muito bêbado, responde, segurando uma garrafa como se fosse tacar em alguém: "Eu te cubro!"... It's cold and rainy again... This is such a shitty city, its wheater is never stable! And today we had hands-on classes, and it means that we had to spend the entire day working in the rain. I was almost fully recovered from a cold I had caught, but it seems I will get worse again... =(
At night, club! It was pretty cool, we played pool, danced... And everybody was really drunk! John came talk to me, saying to go talk to some girls, but I told him that they were with some guys, and then he says, very drunk and holding a bottle as he was going to hit someone: "I watch your back!"... Every looked really funny!
Mais duas provas hoje: 8.0 e 7.0... A segunda foi na trave! Teve um monte de gente que reprovou nessa, mas eu ainda tou conseguindo me manter na faixa dos alunos regulares... Por causa disso, lembrei do Jackson, que era chamado de "R cum lauda" por sua exímia precisão em tirar as notas "mínimas, necessárias e suficientes" (sic) pra passar... eheheh...
Hoje foi o aniversário do Redouanne, então a gente foi jantar fora pra comemorar. Fomos de novo no Red Lobster, aquele restaurante das lagostas no aquário.

Two more tests: 80% and 70%... The second one was right on the line! There were lots of people getting bad marks on this test, but I'm still being able to keep on the "regular students" range... It reminded me about Jackson, my friend from university, who was called "R cum laude", because of his incredible ability of getting the "minimal, essential and enough" (sic) marks to pass the tests... ehehhe...
Today was Redouanne's birthday, so we went out for dinner, to celebrate. We went again to Red Lobster, that one with a lobsters' aquarium.
Recebi a minha nota do meu primeiro trabalho de campo: 7,7. Seria uma nota relativamente boa, se eu não fosse perder mais um ponto por cada hora de atraso... Ou seja, como eu atrasei duas horas, minha nota vai ser 5,7!!! Ainda bem que a turma toda foi mal, a média da classe foi 5,5. É bom quando a gente não se fode sozinho...
De resto, sem mais novidade... Só muito estudo pras duas provas de amanhã...

I received my grade for my first field job: 77%. It would be a good grade, if I wasn't going to loose more 10% for each hour late... I mean, as I was two hours late, my grade will be 57%!!! Fortunately, everyone got bad marks, the average was 55%. It's good when we don't get fucked up alone...
Furthermore, no news... Just studying a lot for the next two tests tomorrow...
Eu ia comentar uma coisa antes, mas tinha esquecido... Essa é a primeira vez em 6 anos que eu tenho gavetas para colocar as minhas roupas! Pode parecer algo besta, mas a gente realmente só dá valor às coisas simples quando a gente sente falta delas... No alojamento da faculdade, eu tinha só um armário com uns "compartimentos", sem gavetas... E sempre que eu tou em trânsito, seja quando vou pra "minha" casa, ou quando vou pra casa de amigos, deixo as roupas na mala. Ter gavetas agora é muito bom! =)
Depois desses dois dias de trabalho puxado, deram um dia de folga, pra gente recuperar as energias... Ainda bem! Mas hoje não fiz nada de novo... Lavei roupa, arrumei minhas coisas, estudei... Normal... Depois até joguei um pouco de futebol americano com o pessoal aqui. O problema é que eu machuquei meu dedo, tá inchado pra caramba... =(
I was going to tell you about this before, but I forgot... This is the first time in 6 years that I got drawers to put my clothes inside! I might sound silly, but we only give real value to these small things when we miss them... At the university's lodging, I only had an wardrobe with some "bays", with no drawers... And aways when I'm transit, going "home" or to my friends' place, I let my clothes in my bags. To have drawers is really nice! =D
After these two days working, they gave us a day-off, so we could recorver our energies... That was really good! But I didn't do anything new... I did my laundry, organized my things, studied... AS usual... After this, I even played a little bit of footbal with the guys here. The only problem is that I've hurt my finger, it's very swollen... =(
Lembra que eu disse que um dia de descanso é muito bom? Então... É bom mesmo! Principalmente quando depois dele a gente praticamente vara a noite, trabalhando por cerca de 40 horas seguidas, dormindo só 3 horas... Se bem que eu até dormi bastante, teve gente dormiu menos do que eu...
Mas deixa eu explicar o que aconteceu... A gente teve o nosso primeiro trabalho de campo, em que a gente faz uma série de medições num poço de petróleo. Ou seja, fiz meu primeiro trabalho como engenheiro aqui, uhuuu!!! Fiquei muito contente hoje, apesar de todo o cansaço (a gente demora um dia inteiro se preparando pro trabalho, e mais um dia fazendo o mesmo), mas valeu a pena! Agora que eu terminei, me sinto recompensado pelo meu esforço!
Não deu tempo de eu tirar muitas fotos, mas tou colocando duas aqui pra ilustrar como foram esses dois dias. Numa foto, o John tá puxando um cabo de aço que leva as ferramentas até o fundo do poço. Na outra, eu tou comandando o guincho que controla esse cabo de aço.
Do you remember when I said that a day-off is very good? So... It's really good, indeed! Specially when after it, we spend pratically all night over working, for about 40 hours straight, sleeping only about 3 hours... Actually it was a good sleep comparing to some other guys...
But let me explain to you what happened... We had our first field job, where we have to take lots of measurements in a oil wellsite. I mean, I've done my first job as an engineer here, yay!!! I was really happy today, besides all the tiredness (we take one entire day to prepare for the job, and one more to do the job), but it was really good! Now that I'm done, I feel rewarded by my efforts!
I didn't had much time to take pictures, but I'm posting here two of them, to illustrate how were these two days. In the first one, John is pulling a steel cable, which takes the tools to the bottom of the well. On the other one, I'm driving the winch which controls this cable.
